Quick Index:     Constructing Queries       Sort Options       Results of a Query

There are a number of fields available for searching:

Constructing Queries

Searches can be constructed by using any combination of the fields. The search program is case insensitive.

The fields of locus symbol, locus name, Gene/Allele/Anomaly symbol, or Stock Name can be searched by entering text into the appropriate area on the form. The default operator (usually 'contains', sometimes 'begins') shows in the box with the arrow. You can over-ride the default by clicking on the down arrow and selecting one of the other operators. The choices are 'contains', 'equals', 'begins', or 'ends.'

The other areas on the search form consist of pull down lists; the first option on each always being 'ALL' which will not restrict the search further within the categories of chromosome, type of mutation, and type of strain. If an item from a pull down list is selected this will limit the search within the category chosen. Descriptions of the terms within these pull down lists can be found in the glossary.

Locus Symbol

Locus Symbol  -   Searching in this field will pull out results that contain the characters entered into the Locus Symbol box on the screen. The search program will query both the Locus Symbol and Alternate Locus Symbol fields on the database (current and older nomenclature.) For example, 'mo' will retrive all mottled stocks, as would searching on 'atp'. If a more specific search is required use the equals, begins, or ends operators.

Locus Name                Back to top of page

Locus Name   -   This allows searching on the name assigned to the mouse locus. Using the default operator of 'contains' gives the most successful results when searching in this field. The search program will query both the Locus Name and Alternate Locus Name fields on the database (current and older nomenclature.) Searching on Locus Name contains 'spot' will find Locus Ednrb (endothelin receptor type B, formerly piebald spotting) and Locus Kit (kit oncogene, formerly dominant spotting)

Gene/Allele or
Anomaly Symbol

Gene / Allele / Anomaly Symbol  -   Searching in this field will pull out results that contain the characters entered into the appropriate area on the screen. The Search program will query both the Allele field (current nomenclature) and any Alternate_Allele_Names (older nomenclature.) For example, 'contains mo' will retrieve all mottled stocks, as would searching on 'contains atp'. If a more specific search is required use the equals, begins, or ends operators. The beginning of a superscripted field can be denoted by using the caret character, ^. For example to find the allele Sox18Ra, you would enter sox18^ra in this field.

Chromosome:         Back to top of page

Chromosome   -   A pull down list of chromosomes is available for searching by chromosome. If a specific chromosome is not required then the default value of 'ALL' should be left, otherwise select a chromosome value from the pull down list.

Stock Name

Stock Name   -   This search field was added at the request of Mouse House researchers and will not be as useful to the general public. Entering data in the box will cause a query on both the Stock_Name and Alternate_Stock_Name fields.

Type of Mutation

Type of Mutation   -   Options for these fields are available from pull down lists; definitions can be found in the
glossary. Leaving the default value of 'ALL' in both the fields will ensure that the search is not restricted to a mutant type. In the output any 'induced' or 'spontaneous' mutations will be listed as the more specific mutation type (Deletion, Duplication, Insertion, Intragenic Mutation, Inversion, Not Known, Point Mutation , Rearrangement, Single Locus, Translocation, Transposition.)

Type of Strain                Back to top of page

Type of Strain   -   Options for this field are available from a pull down list. Leaving the default value of 'ALL' selected ensures that the search is not restricted. Selecting a type of strain will restrict the search to those stocks carrying the classification and can be used in conjunction with any of the search areas on the top half of the form. Definitions of the strain type can be found in the glossary. (Stocks that are no longer available at the Mouse House may not have a strain type specified.)

Sort Options

Sort Results By: Symbol     (# of matches to display: All   10 20 30 50)
Chromosome (All records displayed.)
Mutation Type (All records displayed.)
If you choose to sort the results by Allele/Gene/Anomaly name, you can have small batches of data (10, 20, or 30) returned at a time. Currently if you sort results by Chromosome or Mutation Type, you get all records at once.

Results of a Query

The results are returned to the user in a tabular format (shown below). The total number of records retrieved are indicated, with the total number being displayed as a default of 10 if no other option is selected on the search form. A button at the bottom of the results page links the user to the remaining results. Where data is not provided for a record, the field will remain blank.

Availability

The results table from the query provides the end user with two links to obtain more information about the stocks.

A link from the Allele Symbol column will provide detailed information about that Allele/Gene/Anomaly.

A link from the Stock Name field will provide additional information about the stock, including genotype information.

In the Mutation Type column the Mutation-type field will be displayed in bold, with the mutation-type-modifier in plain text. However both fields are searched when specifying a Mutation Type search criteria. For example, searching for Mutation Type = Inversion will find alleles with Mutation Type = Inversion and alleles with a Mutation Type Modifier = Inverted.
